A certain Mr Seet hasn't quite got his political theories right. Here is the rather poorly-argued letter to the Straits Times.
from the Straits Times forum page, 17 May 2008

VOTING AND NS NOT QUITE THE SAME

EQUATING serving national service (NS) to qualifying to vote is wrong.

Serving national service is just a baby step towards understanding the great importance of politics.

We know politics is about taking sides.

Politics also often involves envy, self-interest and, worse, blind loyalty.

Race, religion and money also revolve around politics.

An 18-year-old must be able... (more)

yay. still alive! that may disappoint some people but unfortunately I have met the challenges uni and other commitments threw at me and came out no worse for wear.
it's been awhile. at the cajoling by qingxu on this other scourge of the internet known quaintly as facebook, i have returned. having no internet in my room, i waste time rewatching old videos and reading for classes instead of pouring angst on to an online outlet.
have had the privilege to attend interest lectures (controversial u might say) by the likes of the Hungarian PM, Professors Stephen Walt and John Mearsheimer on the... (more)

my sis is in the Radio 100.3FM Ti1 Guan3 Da4 Lei4 Tai2 final. yes, that annual competition in which the station seeks out new blood.
just heard her live on radio over the internet. cool stuff. don't get to hear your sister do a radio show everyday.
if you are in Singapore, you can do me a small favour by smsing F3 to 97171003. this means voting for my sister for the Ren2 Qi4 award (pseudo-"popularity" basically). And of course, if its not too much trouble, see her perform alongside 9 other finalists at Plaza Singapura this Sunday.
details at www.radio1003.com
okay, my 'shameless plugging'... (more)

oh yes. back in london. unsurprisingly greeted by low grey gloom that is the english sky and its ever faithful companion - the rain.
plane ride is fine, although getting to the accommodation with abt 50kg of luggage was a bit tricky, especially in the tube.
no internet in my room. shit. but with easy access to computers in the beaver office, that's not too much of a problem. as of now.
loose tv, beaver, work...ah. the excitement never stops.

the internship has concluded. did well enough to get the news editor to offer me future employment. hahaha. must have done something right. been an interesting 8wks. seen and done things i would have never imagined. get paid to go travel around Singapore and see my own country with new informed eyes. not too damn bad at all.
singing. ah at last got to belt out some j-rock hits after a long hiatus. need more of the karaoke fix before i head back.
bball too. cant get much of that in the UK. gotta play while i can now.
two weeks to london. how will i spend it? i dont really know...

for the first, and hopefully last time (barring another chance, one-off opportunity), i entered changi prison. and it's not jus the prison link centre.
but deep into its bowels. through its unforgiving jaws. walked past and into its austere, almost spartanly designed buildings. no frills. no artistry. pure simple functionality.
what for? interviewing a couple of inmates on their involvement in the yellow ribbon project.
they say there are no 2 same days in journalism. i revel in that.

accommodation. plane tickets. the next story. meeting friends and teachers. contacting friends in London. argh.
at least i'm heading somewhere on the first one. hopefully everything else will fall into place.
once again, i'm unable to do much for a friend in need. sigh.
on the internship? it's been a cool 5+ weeks. interesting stories, intriguing events, invaluable experiences. and of course, a nice portfolio is in the works. bylines...bylines...lol.
P.S.: a big thank you to Miss Pear and Miss Sew for their generous treat at Yong Chun Yuan. the cynics among us have (jokingly) described it... (more)

my first one! in the Straits Times home section. a picture story on the Sony Creative Science Award 2007. hurrah.
Temasek Seminar turned out to be cool. Sitting beside Cheryl Fox as a fellow member of the media is always cool. not to mention getting to write a 35cm long story for the first time. and a split second appearance on Channelnewsasia and the mandarin news programmes.
havent seen so much brass in one place. Defence Minister, Chief of Army, 4 or 5 BGs, all the COLs you could ask for, tons of LTCs, MAJs and CPTs. poor little JC boys. today they chat freely and candidly. in a couple... (more)

been to quite a few of those lately. been quite nolstagic affairs...reliving secondary school days with classmates and CCA mates alike, playing bball with army buddies like 9 months before. more of that in the 2 months ahead.
時をかける少女 - The girl who leapt through time. an engaging and thoroughly charming anime film. based on a 1976 novel, the anime adaptation did not disappoint, taking an interesting premise and injecting with youthful vigour with rather adorable characters, although the ending really could have been made tighter. and it did take the niece as the main protagonist...
